Kotahi ki reira ki Āraiteuru, kotahi ki reira kotahi ki Niua, ā homai he toa, he kaha e aua taniwha ki Ngāpuhi – One there is Āraiteuru, another there is Niua; may those taniwha bring courage and strength to Ngāpuhi. – Tāhuhu Kōrero (2008)
The whakatauki (proverb) above refers to two taniwha named Āraiteuru and Niua (also Niniwa and Niwa) that are said to have accompanied Kupe on his voyage to Aoteroa. It is held that the two now act as kaitiaki (guardian) at the entrance to the Hokianga Harbour.
